Greeting by the Commandant of the National Defence University of Ukraine, Colonel General Mykhailo KOVAL, on the Day of Ukrainian Statehood

Statehood does not begin with borders.

It begins with people who know who they are. People who remember their roots, defend their homeland, speak their language, preserve their culture, and refuse to let others determine their future.

That is why Ukrainian statehood is not merely a date on the calendar or a chapter in history. It is a continuous choice made by generation after generation—the choice to remain free, to take responsibility, and to stand united in defence of our nation.

Today, Ukrainian defenders reaffirm that choice every single day. They defend far more than our land. They defend Ukraine's right to exist as a sovereign, independent state, to educate its children, to build its future, and to live in freedom.

For the National Defence University of Ukraine, the Day of Ukrainian Statehood carries profound meaning. We educate officers who will not only command military units but also inspire trust, lead by example, and accept responsibility for those they serve. Through education, leadership, professionalism, and character, we contribute to strengthening the resilience of our state.

Today, we honour all those who, throughout our history, fought for and defended Ukraine. We bow our heads in memory of the warriors who gave their lives for our freedom and independence. Their courage and sacrifice have become an inseparable part of Ukrainian statehood and will forever remain part of our national memory.

Ukrainian statehood has endured not because it was ever granted, but because there have always been those prepared to defend it.

As long as there are people willing to stand for Ukraine, our statehood will endure.

Together, we continue to strengthen it every day.
